This is the SLG blog that Lief never wanted to start. But Thomas started it for me and challenged me to make it better and hey, I took the challenge and here it is, and I hope with every post it is a better, and more entertaining blog.

T'is the season...

No, not of Christmas. It is just the time of year that our minds have decided to run a fall marathon, and I hope for most of us that will be the New York Marathon. The mind has decided but the body feels it is impossible to train for another marathon. So, we have this struggle going on between "I should run but who wants to run. I'll run tomorrow, no I really should run today but it is so hot/cold/rainy... (fill in what applies). We'll use the weirdest excuses not to run but then we feel guilty about not running so hopefully this posting can be the annual kick in the butt from the coach.
I had an interesting exchange with Mike last weekend
On Saturday : Mike : I think I will run 12 tomorrow
Lief : Oh, what time do you think of going out? I will join you for
8
Mike : oh, it will have to be early because I am going to the Met game
at 1 p.m. I'm not sure exactly what I will do.
At that point, I thought it was better to put the subject of running together to rest.

On Sunday morning, 8.15 am. Lief and Mark are entering the park for an 8 miler, Mike surprisingly is exiting already.
Lief : So Mike, you finished 12 already??
Mike : Oh, I only ran 4. I think I will run another 4 after the Mets
game (during which he will drink at least 4 beers)
Lief : yeah right Mike
Then Mike returned to his senses, turned around and joined Mark and myself for another 4 miles. Not quite the 12 he had advertised but better than the 4 that he had run that morning.

Anyway, with the New York Half Marathon scheduled for this Sunday at 7 a.m., and it promises to be a hot one, hopefully the New York chapter will get inspired to start training for the big race in earnest.
We have a new half marathoner at the start this year. After starting out as an ABC'er (which used to be the female part of SLG), and dabling in some races, Margarita got all serious this year and will be at the start this Sunday. She has already completed 7 NYRRC races this year. Two more, Margarita and you will have a guaranteed spot for the New York City marathon for next year. And that is more than most SLG'ers can say. Good luck to Margarita and anybody else who is running. I think besides her, I am running as are Stefan, Gil and Mike and hopefully Mark will join us as a "bandit"
Which brings us to the marathon. I think it is amazing that Grant reached his fundraising goal of 2500$ in less than 2 months. Wow!! And that doesn't mean the donations will stop there. I think there should be a system that once you reach the 2500$ goal, any more fund raising could be applied to procuring yet another number.
Clem, Mark, Stefan, Gil, David, and I were in automatically. Dora, Erik, Grant and Philippe applied for the lottery but nobody got in. Erik is hurt and I think he has no interest in competing at this point. Grant immediately took matters in his own hands and signed up for charity and has already reached his goal. Gil took matters in his hands, used his "long arm" and got Dora an entry ticket. Which leaves Philippe. Maybe Gil can use another "long arm", I am not sure how many he has or Grant may inspire Philippe or something will happen that Philippe will get in too.
And that's where I am leaving it for today but a post was more than overdue. So I got a kick in the butt from Grant about posting blogs and I am passing out that kick to you all (and to our loyal fan club). Get out of your couch, come home from the beach and start training.

This is a posting by Grant!!!

Hello from the land of palm trees and sunshine...

David and I are happy to be representing the Southern California chapter
of SLG. With the Minneapolis chapter having been established and grown,
we felt we needed to take our message of "Running and the Love of all
things Belgian" to the new frontier.

I am very pleased to say that as of last week, I have met my fundraising
goal. Thank you to all who helped make it possible. Now I can
concentrate on the running.

Looking forward to seeing you all in less than 95 days!

Grant
