This is the SLG blog that Lief never wanted to start. But Thomas started it for me and challenged me to make it better and hey, I took the challenge and here it is, and I hope with every post it is a better, and more entertaining blog.

Say it ain't so, Joe!!!

Just back from a run on a cold but bright and sunny day and it is amazing how 11 miles can clear one's head. So here I am to report on the state of SLG and instead of enthousiasm for a new season, I feel that SLG is going the way of Lehman Brothers, Merryll Lynch and the the Big 3 Automakers!
The week started out well enough. Just look at this pictures, taken last Sunday, November 16th. The founding fathers, plus the Queen and the Emperor were very pleased with their results in "The Race to Deliver". This has been the race in which all of us have run our best times, coming on the heels of the NY marathon. Since none of us ran in NY this year, all bets were off but here are the results for this fine 4 miler :
Gil : 26:55 or a 6:43 minute mile (still on top)
Stefan : 30:39 or a 7:39 minute mile (and very happy to have beaten the Queen again)
Lief : 31:34 or a 7:53 minute mile (never imagined she would beat the 8 min/miles again)
Mark : 32:05 or a 8:01 minute mile (was not used to the new corral system yet and got stuck
in the traffic of the last corral)
So all of us were on a runners high but then I got a message from the Supercoach which made my heart skip a beat. Only weeks after planting the seed to run the next race to get to the BIG 5, Clem obviously was in a funk.
While we were running our 4 miles last Sunday, he finished his 92nd (!) marathon. He felt bummed about his finishing time and expressed disappointment about the 4 marathons he had run in 2008. When he told me he even considered stopping marathon running altogether then and there I almost fainted! But after careful evaluation , and with the goal of 100 marathons so close, it seems that he has come up with a plan. It involves weight loss, which he hopes will make running easier and more satisfactory which would then lead to more running motivation and ultimately a better condition. Clem confided a while ago it was getting harder and harder to motivate himself to run, what with 2 very cute grandchildren tugging at his heartstrings and competing for a limited amount of free time.
I am sure that all of you, like me, hope he will stick to his plan, and that we will see him in a few more marathons. He has been such an example to us all and it would be a big loss for SLG if he would stop competing, just a whiff away from his lofty goal of 100 marathons.
Of course we may have aimed a little high, by trying to get a group together for Boston, one of the two remaining races to get to the Big 5. After initial enthousiasm, the reality of trying to get in, has set in. Gil and I, AND CLEM are qualified for Boston. So is Gloria, Gil's sister and according to Gil (who I spoke to a second ago) she has already booked a room in Boston. Dora seems to be able to get a number through some European tour operator and is working on that. Stefan considered charity but finds the 3000$ that he has to raise a bit daunting. And who can blame him with all the uncertainties of the economy. And David also seems interested in running.
As founding father Stefan has pointed out, the number of marathons that we will run and run together as SLG'ers is extremely limited. I think he is right. So, I am exploring all the avenues available, I am looking at all possibilities to get entry numbers for Boston.
I have never had as much fun running as the last four years, when SLG came into being. And not only the running has been great but even more so have the parties, the cameraderie, the teasing, the rivalries! It will leave a big void if all that disappears! So let's see what we can come up with! It is hard to believe that the best years of SLG are behind us! Say it ain't so, Joe!
P.S Weather forecast for Monday April 20th, 2009 is as follows :
45 degrees in the morning going up to a sunny and windless 54 degrees in the afternoon!

Ok Clem, just so that you know.... Stopping now, is not really an option. Planning has commenced to celebrate with you -and maybe even participate- in your centennial Marathon. When you figure out the weight loss thing please let me know... that's something that I have been trying to figure out for a long time. I have to tell you that I do fully understand your Marathon fatigue, unfortunately mine kicked in after the 4th Marathon already. Nonetheless I find the prospect of Boston not unappealing. I always wanted to have one of these cool and awe inspiring Boston Marathon jackets...of course you can only wear these if you actually ran it. I have to point out that I don't agree with the SLG doomsday talk on the blog. I think that the state of the club is strong! This was a great season with many highlights - SLG going international, a new chapter in Panama and Venzuela, another great NYC Marathon Party, I hear the CA chapter is doing the LA half early December, and many more... . So for Boston, I put myself in the mindset as if I am signed up. That is, I created my training plan online and am booking miles against at pretty decent clip right now. I figure that I can maybe run as a bandit if I won't get a number. Worst thing that can happen is that I loose 20 pounds by the time spring arrives (imagine me wandering on the Jersey beaches with my early 30s weight - I suppose Anne would like that too).. I could then focus on the 2009 NYC Marathon and go for emperorship, nothing less of course.... I suppose that Gil as well as Clem would not let this happen, and of course I first would have to beat the queen.

Keep running SLG
Cheers
Founding Father Stefan

I’m saddened to hear the blues that have overcome SLG. While Steve and I are not as active in SLG as we would like, we still consider ourselves strong, official members and talk and reminisce often of the great times that have been had and more yet to come. I still wear my official SLG shirt proudly on runs here in the cold tundra. Steve and I have felt bad that we were not able to join the group this year in Berlin. Both of us have small children and it really makes it difficult to work around children, work and wives (not that any are bad!!). My last effort at Boston qualifying left me either 8 minutes too slow, one mile too short or 6-months too young (take your pick). I know that neither Steve or I are yet qualified for Boston. Steve’s qualifying time is 3:20 and mine is now 3:30. We are planning to make a serious push to qualify in 2009 for a potential 2010 Boston. I know that this probably does not work into the SLG plan and we certainly understand that you need to stay your course. I know that both my wife Vickey and Steve’s wife Kris would come to the Big Apple again in a heartbeat (and let us run another marathon there) to run NY if it weren’t so darn expensive. Well anyway, I am sure that I speak on behalf of Steve when I say that all SLGers need to pull themselves up by their shoelaces, throw the caution of aging to the wind and proudly proclaim that 2009 will be the best year ever individually and collectively!! SO: out with the blues and ON with the SHOES! SLG ROCKS!

Sincerely,

Your humble and committed Minnesota Chapter

Nicely put, Larry. Grant and I miss you guys out there in MSP!

While I can't speak for the other half of the LA chapter, I certainly plan on getting back into the action next year. I've been very fortunate (knock on wood) and haven't had any major leg, hip, knee -- or whatever else -- issues so I don't have a good reason not to run.

As a first step, the LA half marathon is only two weeks away, and it will be the first major event for me since NY in 2007. But it's not meant to be just another half marathon, it was suppose to be one of many long training runs for a marathon TBD in early 2009. I suffered a little set back last week when I learned the new owner of the LA marathon pushed the 2009 race back from February to May. Sorry SLG MSP, but even February can be warm here and May would be unbearable for me. And like Stefan, I have concerns about raising $3000(!) for Boston. So that leaves me without a plan, but still running long distances on the weekends. I'll have to look at the calendar and see what's coming up in the next few months. And if anyone wants to join me and has a suggestion, all the better.

Now if I can only get Grant back out there!

dg

P.S. Congrats, Clem. And keep it up!
