This is the SLG blog that Lief never wanted to start. But Thomas started it for me and challenged me to make it better and hey, I took the challenge and here it is, and I hope with every post it is a better, and more entertaining blog.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Bethesda fountain...

Some interesting developments have been taking place in the last couple of weeks on the SLG/ABC front. Has anybody noticed how quiet the SLG'ers have been lately? Hibernation should be over by now. Temperatures should be conducive to running, yet, nobody seems to communicate about running lately. Growing pains of SLG? No more interest in running? Real life taking over? (No, not that, please!!!)
I am a bit suspicious of Erik. With the half marathon on his home court only two weeks away, I think he has pulled out all stops and is training so hard that he has no time for anything else. Obviously he has winning on the brain.
Voila, the subject of the New Jersey half is on the screen now. Who dreamt up the starting time of this event. 7.15 a.m???? We can be back in bed by 10. But of course we won't be back in bed, we will be at "Chez Sevenants" for brunch afterwards, with, as Erik has advertised : "Half portions"
I am sure I will be "half asleep" with a starting time of 7.15 a.m.
Anyway, I actually have another concern. Although I will definitely be down at the Jersey shore for this event, I am not a 100% sure I will be running it. The coach is hobbled. I ran the More half marathon three weeks ago and I thought it went OK, not great but I was happy with my time. Then I went running a few times the week after and it just didn't go well. The Sunday after the half, there was a 10 k race (the Scotland run) and slowly but surely I was starting to realize that I probably wouldn't be able to run my desired sub 8min/miles. So there I was, joined by Gil and Mark and sure enough, in the third mile my left butt (which I had been trying to ignore very hard) started to act up to the point that I could not really run decently. I thought for a while to quit but I decided to stick it out. (hey another race towards the 9 required for guaranteed entry for next year). By the time I finished, I was pretty sore and so stiff that I couldn't really lift my left leg. A bit of a bummer but my sciatica is back in full force.
Anyway, no need to say I haven't been running since then but I did make one exception. Margarita (ABC) was running a 4 mile race last Sunday and I decided I would run with her. All of a sudden, she had a veritable entourage when Anne (ABC and wife of founding father Stefan) also decided to run. And here is where the funny thing on the way to the Bethesda fountain started to happen. You have to know this about Anne. She used to be a serious 800 meter running in high school in Germany but had not run for the last few years. She had a false start last year when she decided to train for a race but got tendinitis in her Achilles tendons immediately. So she decided to take it easy for the NEXT YEAR, until last Sunday when she would run this 4 miler.
The start was on 68th street on the east drive. So, the first mile was uphill (the famous cat hill in the park). We were very conservative, "running" it in 11'49", and we lost Margarita almost immediately in the crowd. The second mile (the easiest mile on the course) we ran in 10' even. Then, on the west side, Anne started to accelerate a bit and in the last mile I told her to go for it. My butt had been bothering me pretty much in the first two miles but then it stabilized a bit. Anyway, on the downhill part Anne pulled away from me and I got a bit concerned that she would beat me. Luckily, right before the turn onto the 72nd street transverse, I caught up with her and we finished in a respectable 39.51 or 9'57 minute mile.
So, here is Anne, who hasn't really run in years and she just wips out this race like that, running every mile faster than her previous one. WOW!!!!!!
By doing this, she has officially lost her title of lazy f..( no, it is not what you think), she is no longer the lazy fox, that title has now been handed down to Wendy. Wendy, you are now officially notified of the title!!!
But that is not the only achievement of the ABC's (Absolutely Fabulous Chicks, or those people among you who have forgotten who we are) .
Margarita reached her goal by finishing the race without having to walk so congrats to her!!!AND there is extremely exciting running news from the Chicago chapter. Petra has also started to run again and ran her first race. A 5 miler! Rumor has it that she had to slow down at the end so she wouldn't beat Philippe. (Philippe, you wanted to be mentioned in the next e-mail, well you are mentioned.)
Other newsworthy things (thank God there is not much news, otherwise this e-mail would never end)
1/ More injury news. Founding father Stefan has been having issues with his Soleus muscle (or so I have diagnosed it) and has not been able to run for 3 weeks. He is extremely worried that his sub 8min/mile streak is going to end and I have a lot of sympathy for that.

2/Thomas hurt his back lifting his boat (what serious runner lifts boats in his spare time?) but apparently he is getting better.

3/What is the Vandenabeele/Devos family up to? Haven't heard from them since they moved back to Belgium

4/ Liesbet, it is very quiet in London or wherever you are.

5/ Got some pictures from Claudia last week. Oh man, is she having a tough life in Caracas and surroundings. The pictures from Los Roques (yes she went back to Los Roques without me) almost made me cry.

6/ I am sick of the renovation at SLG headquarters now. Although I like the way things look, like with all renovation projects, work has slowed down a lot in the last 3 weeks and I am getting a bit frustrated. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel but all of a sudden I want to have my life back, I want more space to live in and I want to be able to plan BBQ's and other social events. How are we going to move the red couch back through the window and down if we don't have the prerequisite excuse BBQ to get the strong men here.

Anyway, that's all for now (I know, I know, not a moment too soon). I hope we'll have a decent showing of the New York members in New Jersey. For running or cheering!!!! Lief

Apres ski

OK, as promised, I would give you an update after my ski trip so here I am, with VERY LITTLE motivation or enthousiasm ( I never know how to spell enthousiasm) to run this Sunday's More (old lady) half marathon.
First of, I didn't really train much. It is a bit like : "What the heck! It is only 13 miles, I can wing it, I don't REALLY need to train for a HALF marathon!" Yeah right! Of course, I can RUN a half marathon (SLOWLY!). Boy, I am starting to sound (LOOK) like that book "A prayer for Owen Meany" It was a John Irving book that I didn't particularly care for and whenever Owen Meany spoke it was in capital letters. After a while I started to skip the small print and read only what Owen said. Then I stopped reading the book altogether. I promise I will stop putting capital letters in here so you won't stop reading. I hope.
So anyway, I decided not to run the More Marathon this year because for various reasons, I think it is a bit of a Mickey Mouse race and I just didn't feel like spending all my time this winter doing long runs.
Second, although I had a really good ski trip last week with excellent snow conditions, I did manage to bruise a rib (or two) when I fell in this big field of powder but on top of somebody else's ski. Nothing major except it is hard to breath in deep, cough or sneeze. So just to make sure I could run this race at all I went out and ran 9 miles yesterday, slowly (I am very tempted to put that "slowly" in capital letters but I won"t). And my feeling is that if I can run 9 miles slowly, I can run 13.1, even if it is only a training run. That way all you people who are coming to New Jersey with us to run a flat (the urge to go capital again) half marathon may just feel a tad intimidated that I am doing a 13 mile training run this weekend.
Stefan, how are you enjoying the Florida keys??
Then of course there is the weather forecast for Sunday, rain and SNOW showers ( with a forecast like that, I could not help myself, capital letters were in order). Remember last year's weather for the More marathon? We had the after marathon party on the terrace and I think we were out there till about six o'clock in the evening.
\nBut of course the biggest reason that I feel extremely unmotivated is the \nfact that my support group will not be around. Stephan and Anne in the \nFlorida keys, Wendy\'s parents are visiting, Erik will be in Dallas, Deb will be \nin Denver, David moved away to Minnesota, Claudia to Venezuela, Micheline and \nSteven to Belgium and Nathalie made the move to Belgium last year already. \nEven Larry won\'t be here, he is attending a family event. So here is needy \nLiefy, without much of a support team. No wonder the motivation is hard to \ncome by.\nBut, warmer weather cannot be far away and hopefully the running bug will \nreturn. I cannot believe there won\'t be a lot of SLG spirit building up to \nthe New Jersey half marathon. And after that, it won\'t be long until we \nhave to get serious about training for the Chicago marathon. Only seven \nmonths minus one day away. And counting.....\nNot much other news. Renovations are going pretty much according to \nplan, apparently we should be able to walk between the 4th and the 5th floor via \nan internal staircase by the end of next week.\nErik and Wendy\'s renovations are finished. They now have a new living \nroom with a fireplace. And Wendy\'s Dad who is visiting from Belgium has \ndiscovered Loew\'s home improvement store and has decided to renovate their \nsecond bathroom.\nThomas is trying to get me to start an SLG blog. Erik and Stefan, how \nis that website coming?\nDavid, have you recovered from having a new job yet. How's the SLG logo Micheline and Steven moved back to Belgium this past Wednesday!.. Good luck to you both. Claudia moved back to Caracas in February and seems to be really happy in \nher new job of micro financing. (Making small loans to people in the third world \nfor very small projects. Is that right Claudia?..Rumor has it that she \nwill be the future president of Venezuela!)\nAnne is negotiating terms for a part time job as a speech \npathologist.

Inspiration

OK people, you see we are getting inspiration from all over the world.
I can feel the SLG vibes picking up slowly but surely. Saturday night the "Minnesota terrorists" called (am I going to get in trouble with Bush for putting that word in my e-mails) aka Larry and Steve called. The Minnesota chapter (or half of it, after all, we have 4 members in Minnesota) was having a meeting and wanted to check with headquarters how the preparations for the marathon weekend in Chicago were coming along. It seems to be a bit early to be this much organized but I love their enthousiam. (sp?)
Sunday was the first official SLG middle distance training run in the park, just to find out how far we have fallen back since November 6th. Attendance was meager at best. Gil showed up and Thomas took part in his first official SLG training run.
Clem ran his first marathon of the year yesterday in Malta but I haven't heard how it went. He is probably enjoying some R and R there before heading back home so I am sure we will hear from him in the next few days.
So, things are still fairly quiet on the SLG front but I am sure things will be picking up later this month when people are starting to realize that the New Jersey half is not that far off. There is a 15 k in the park this coming Sunday and the course for it couldn't be better. I urge all locals to participate in that one. Then I am off to Utah for my altitude training (haha) so that I will be in great shape (yeah right) for the More Half marathon. Lief

Full disclosure

For the sake of full disclosure, I am planning to do a longer run tomorrow Sunday, and Gil is coming to town to join me for part of it. I am planning to run 12 miles, ans will probably start sometime between 9.30 and 10 a.m. Gill will join at 10.30 and will meet me at the SLG fountain. If anybody wants to join let me know. If not, don't tell me I didn't give you a heads up.
Anybody up for a run today? Lief

Reprimanded

The other day I was reprimanded by one of our international members because it seems a bit quiet on the SLG front, and honestly it is. With me not running a spring marathon, the motivation seems to be lacking a bit. I guess running a marathon really does give you a runner's high. You may not be aware of it, but after the marathon, you think you will always stay you are in the shape you are in and you will just keep up a serious training schedule so that you won't have to build up. WRONG!!!!!!!!!! After the NY marathon, the New Yorkers amongst us run a few short races, talk and try to intimidate our teammates a fair amount but before we know it, the winter is here and the winter blah's are setting in.
Well remember, it was only a month ago that some of us ran the Manhattan half, and maybe not in the best times ever, but we did respectably. There was a 4 miler yesterday, in which I could not participate, but Stefan and Steven ran and both did very well. Although Stefan told me that he "lost", (running 7.01 min/miles and I know that "losing feeling" when you think that if you would have just run 8 seconds faster the mile per minute would have a 6 in front of it) I had to remind him that this was an amazing time considering he definitely could not have been in such good shape as he was when he ran that 6.59 per mile in another 4-miler right after the marathon.
Anyway, so here is a slight kick in the behind and some other reminders that it is time to start thinking about running :
1/Next Sunday, Clem is running the first marathon of the season and the first marathon by a SLG member (as I super coach should do). He is going to Malta and he has let me know that he is not in great shape, so he does not think he will do any better than 3:30. Don't you all love it, he isn't not in great shape and that is what he thinks he will do. Don't we all wish.....
2/ There is a 15 k race in Central Park on March 12th. A good reason to not use the deep freez temperature as an excuse not to go training. March 12th is only 2 WEEKS AWAY!!!!!!!!!! (Don't worry Dora, I have not forgotten that I am meeting you in Utah that day, I am jumping on a plane after the race) Anyway, for those who the motto applies to,"Catch me if you can" should be in your heads EVERY DAY, and not just on the morning of October 22nd
3/ For me, this year there is the Old Lady 1/2 marathon. Call me snobbish but I just have the feeling that this more marathon is not going anywhere. I had to weave around one too many "walkers" on their cell phones last year who claimed to be participating in the race and I lost my interest in doing the whole nine yards so to speak (how many yards is a marathon???) But I will be running the half because it will be a good training run for the
4/ NEW JERSEY HALF MARATHON which takes place on April 30th. Erik Sevenants will have the home court advantage there and that will kick off the official spring training season, culminating in the Bronx half marathon in the beginning of July (and usually beastly hot). That race will show us where we stand and the training for the Chicago marathon will commence in earnest.

So, you have until March 19th to get over these winter excuses, after that I will have to get more serious about the coaching business and all the things that go together with that. By sometime in May, it would be fun to have a little biography from all of you. It doesn't have to be long, just a few lines about how you got to running, what you have run (just a few lines, Cle, just a few lines), where you live and how you came to SLG. You can also include hobbies (who has time for hobbies when you are such serious runners as we are) and the names of your favorite pets, children, grandchildren etc.

Anyway, you can see, although it has been a bit quiet on the coaches' front, I am alive, and kicking a little bit. I am also glad to announce you that construction at the new SLG headquarters is progressing as smoothly as can be expected. And remember, less that 8 months till the Chicago marathon 2006. Lief

Yet another guy for Chicago

OK, some big news guys, just another step forward in the growth of SLG. And in the "words" of Neil Armstrong : "A small step for runners, a huge step for SLG!" And with the following big news, I do not want to hear any comments from Stefan's peanuts gallery.
Although there were only 3 members running this morning, Steven, Stefan and I burned the road in the Manhattan half. It was another fine day for SLG and it became even finer when I ran into Mike the Flyer (from my block) as I went back home. When I told him so many of us had signed up for the Chicago marathon, he said he would sign up too and how could he get an SLG T-shirt. Yes, the writing is on the wall that he is converting!
So I think that is terrific new and another fine day for SLG indeed. The sky is the limit! Lief

OK everyone, I want to get this out just in time to wish you all a Happy New Year (the way I always heard it is that you can wish somebody happy New Year until the end of January. More importantly, for runners and non runners alike, tomorrow starts the 9 (nine) month countdown to this year’s running of the Chicago Marathon which will be held on October 22nd. How better to start this countdown than with a 10 mile race in Central Park. You SLG’ers signed up and ready to run? Liesbet? Mark? Stefan? Steven? Gil? Me? What about out of towners? And of course if anybody from the support crew feels a bit rusty about cheering us on, you can come and practice too! Deb? Margarita? Clo? Anne? Who am I forgetting?

There is already a lot of excitement in this young running year. A bunch of people have signed up for Chicago: founding fathers Stefan and Mark, members since the early days Philippe ,Erik, Liesbet, Gil, Lief, Clem, and also our other members David, Grant, Larry Eberhard (from Minnesota, Steve Goldade get your butt in gear!!). Dora also signed up and we got two new members, Patrick Bijnens, from Belgium and a running buddy of Clem (he got in on credentials of having run marathons and anyway, the super coach can vouch for him) and Thomas De Geest. Thomas signed up for the Chicago marathon and became a member last Monday during an all important SLG meeting. More about that later.
\n \nAs some of you already know, I thought the running year which will have its \nclimax on October 22nd, needed a motto. It doesn’t really apply to all the \nSLG members but I thought that “Catch me if you can!” sounded good, “catchy” and \nI thought it would inspire SLG members to really train hard for this one. \nObviously this motto only applies to the real thing, the marathon. You all \nhave proven that you can catch and surpass me easily in the shorter \ndistances. (Sorry, Clem and Patrick, the motto doesn’t really work for you \nguys!)\n \nBesides running news there are a few other things to report ; mostly things \nthat make me a bit sad and I think others will feel the same.\n \n - In a few weeks, Claudia Valladares will be leaving New York and \nwill be moving back to Caracas to become the CEO of a \nMicrobank. I don’t know exactly what that job entails but \nClaudia seems very happy about it. I also don’t know whether there \nwill be a lot of business travel to New York involved but I hope \nwe will get to see her on a regular basis. In any case, \nshe will be sorely missed and I don’t know what effect this \nwill have on French Tuesday but it can’t be good. Not to mention the \neffect it will have on the ABC (Absolutely Bitchy \nChicks)! \n \n-Other people leaving are Steven, Micheline and their daughter \nMadelon. They are \nreturning to Belgium a bit earlier than originally planned because Micheline \nis pregnant and is not \nallowed to fly after the end of March. Congratulations on \nthe bigger family but again, SLG is not completely \nhappy about this but of course we wish you all the \nbest! Go and be that absent minded professor Steven! And come run \nthe Chicago marathon with us. There are \ndirect flights Brussels-Chicago you know!\n \n-Liesbet is also leaving, again. She worked at the Belgian consulate \nfor a few weeks because the consul felt overwhelmed with the visit \nof the prime minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt. So Liesbet \nwas imported to do all the work and lend a shoulder for the consul \nto lean on. So, we will wish her luck in whatever she undertakes \nnext. In the crevasses of my mind I hear the line from that famous \nCountry and Western song : “How can I miss you if you won’t leave” Except, \nwe will have to change that to : “How can we miss you if you keep coming \nback?” (Only kidding, Liesbet) Again, a severe blow for the ABC’s and also for \nFrench Tuesday.",1]

\n \nAnd now for the good news :\n \nOn January 5th, 2006, Jonas Mertens was born. If you now went Huh!!, \nWho is that? Well, Jonas is the first SLG’er by birth, grandson of Clem, \nthe supercoach. And now for the good news :

Wendy has also started a new job. After 6 (?) years of working for Smartstream technologies, she has gone to a Belgian company “Capco” to start up their marketing department. Good luck to Wendy.

Erik and Wendy are renovating their house in New Jersey and are expected to have a new living room in a few weeks.

Wendy has also started a new job. After 6 (?) years of working for Smartstream technologies, she has gone to a Belgian company “Capco” to start up their marketing department. Good luck to Wendy.

Speaking of houses, our newest member, Thomas De Geest has bought a studio apartment near Cooper Square. We are anxiously awaiting the Studio warming party. After inspecting the premises, Stefan has decided that the party will have to happen in shifts. The place seems to be “square footagely challenged”

Our own renovation seems to be going according to plan but we were not ready enough to have an SLG meeting in the new boardroom. So therefore, some members made the sacrifice and transported themselves to Markt. Philippe even came all the way from Chicago. He realized he was getting too mellow out in the midwest so he came over for a Karmeliet, some “best Belgian” fries and after doing this a few times over we ended up across the street for a POP burger.
\n \nAs I mentioned before, there was some serious SLG business to attend to \nlast Monday. 1/After Thomas announced that he had signed up for the \nChicago marathon, we did some testing to see whether he was SLG ready. It \nwas touch and go but HE IS IN! Congrats.\n \n2/It was decided that a website is quickly becoming a necessity. If I \nunderstood correctly, Stefan and Erik “volunteered” to have that up by the end \nof February???It could have member information, member race results, \nmerchandise offerings etc, member biographies etc......(Speaking of biographies, \nin a few months, I will be asking all full SLG members, the ones who have \ncompleted a full marathon or are training for a marathon held in 2006 to provide \nme with a short “running” biography of 100 words.\n \n3/It was also decided that we were badly in need of a logo. After \nsome back and forth, Larry had the brilliant idea to suggest David Garcia’s \nservices. After all, he has the best qualifications as a Graphic Design \nArtist. In the meantime I have contacted David who has agreed to come up with a \nlogo and is working on it as we speak.\n \n4/We also touched on the delicate issue of SLG membership. Who are \ntrue members? Who are staffers? (Larry, our faithful driver for taking us \nto the start year after year is definitely on staff. So is Yvette, after \nmany many massages)\n \nHow to merge SLG and ABC and should they be merged? We couldn’t \nfigure that one out, not even after many Duvels, Karmelieten, Westmalles and \nordinary Stellas. Therefore it was decided that we needed “consultants” \nfor this issue. As I mentioned before, there was some serious SLG business to attend to last Monday. 1/After Thomas announced that he had signed up for the Chicago marathon, we did some testing to see whether he was SLG ready. It was touch and go but HE IS IN! Congrats.

2/It was decided that a website is quickly becoming a necessity. If I understood correctly, Stefan and Erik “volunteered” to have that up by the end of February???It could have member information, member race results, merchandise offerings etc, member biographies etc......(Speaking of biographies, in a few months, I will be asking all full SLG members, the ones who have completed a full marathon or are training for a marathon held in 2006 to provide me with a short “running” biography of 100 words.

3/It was also decided that we were badly in need of a logo. After some back and forth, Larry had the brilliant idea to suggest David Garcia’s services. After all, he has the best qualifications as a Graphic Design Artist. In the meantime I have contacted David who has agreed to come up with a logo and is working on it as we speak.

4/We also touched on the delicate issue of SLG membership. Who are true members? Who are staffers? (Larry, our faithful driver for taking us to the start year after year is definitely on staff. So is Yvette, after many many massages)

How to merge SLG and ABC and should they be merged? We couldn’t figure that one out, not even after many Duvels, Karmelieten, Westmalles and ordinary Stellas. Therefore it was decided that we needed “consultants” for this issue. In the meantime, Stefan and I are working behind the scenes to come up with a “win-win” situation so there won’t be hard feelings.

So, that’s the news for now. As soon as our website is ready (hm, don’t hold your breath), I guess we can incorporate the newsletter into the website. As you can all see, SLG is growing in leaps and bounds. Who would have thought it 2 years ago when I came off a bad NYC marathon experience and I was struggling mightily to train for the first “old lady marathon”. Along came Stefan and Mark to lend a helping leg and voila, SLG was born. Lief.

Catch me if you can

For those of you who haven't registered for the Chicago marathon yet, or have not booked a room at the Best Western Inn yet, or more seriously have not done much running this year yet, I just wanted to give you fair warning and let you know that I finished my first 9+ training mile run today (2 reservoirs and a loop). As usual I had some great thoughts along the way and I thought this young 2006 running season which will culminate for most of us in the Chicago marathon needed a motto. And here it is (except for Patrick and Clem) : "Catch me if you can!" and I don't mean in these little 4, 5, 6, or 10 mile races, I mean in the real thing, the one that counts, the marathon!!!! There I have put down the glove, Or the running sock I guess. Catch me if you can. Coach. Lief
